Cheddar burgers with red onion jam

Olive oil
4 cups thinly sliced red onion
4 teaspoons sugar
4 teaspoons red wine vinegar
3/4 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
Burgers
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 lb ground beef
4 slices white cheddar cheese
4 hamburger buns
Mayonnaise
1. Heat grill to medium-high.
2. To prepare jam:
3. heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
4. Add oil to coat the pan.
5. Add onion and saute 5 minutes.
6. Reduce the heat to medium low and stir in the sugar, vinegar, and thyme.
7. Cover and cook 10 minutes or until the onion is very tender - stirring occasionally.
8. Remove from heat.
9. To prepare burgers:
10. combine the oregano, salt, garlic powder, and beef.
11. Divide mixture into 4 patties (about 1/2 inch thick).
12. Cook patties to desired degree of doneness, adding the cheese to melt in the last 2 minutes.
13. Spread mayonnaise on top half of each bun - place patty on the bottom half and top with the red onion jam.
