Cook Time → 30 min

1. Put the butter in a small pan and melt over a low heat

2. Take the pan off the heat and stir in the cocoa powder, making sure you remove any lumps

3. Beat the eggs in a large bowl

4. Add the sugar and mix until smooth

5. Now put the cocoa mixture into the egg mixture and stir thoroughly before adding vanilla essence

6. Gradually add the self-raising flour through a sieve and keep stirring until it becomes a sticky mixture

7. Finally, add the chocolate chips

8. Line a shallow square or oblong cake tin with greaseproof paper

9. Transfer the mixture to the tin and place in the middle of a preheated oven at 180 deg C or gas mark 4 for around 30 minutes. The chocolate brownies will be crispy on top and goey in the middle

10. Leave them in the tim for roughly 10 minutes before cutting into squares

11. Carefully transfer them to a cooling rack and wait until they are cool enough to eat

12. Now simply enjoy!

This is a recipe from the BBC children's TV programme Blue Peter. I have used it for many years as it is dead easy, makes delicious brownies, and usually I have all the ingredients in the store cupboard already. I've copied the instructions verbatim from Blue Peter Book 30.
