Moms italian bread
Recipe by1 1/3 cup water
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp shortning
3 1/3 cup flour
1 1/4 tsp yeast
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
2. Measure ingredients into pan of bread machine in the order recomended by manufacturer. Insert pan into the oven chamber and select dough cycle.
3. Remove dough to a lightly floured serface, cover with a large bowl and let rest for 10-15 minutes. If dough is sticky, flour your hands and use a small amount on board. Too much flour will make the bread tough and heavy.
4. Divide into two equal parts, shape and place in pans or baking sheet dusted with cornmeal. Cover and let rise in a warm , draft free place until doubled in volume. About 30-40 minutes. To test for readiness, press two fingers into the dough; indents made should remain. Make 3 parallel cuts, 1/4 inch deep across the top of loaf just before baking.
